Boxer menstruel pour flux abondant, à porter jusqu'à 12 heures, le jour comme la nuit

Period underwear: how long can you wear it?

It's the question we hear most often: how long can you keep period underwear on? The answer mostly depends on your flow. Here is how to know when to change it, day and night, and how many pairs to have so you can relax through your whole cycle.

In short: our period underwear offers up to 10 to 12 hours of protection depending on your flow. On your heaviest days, change it more often. On lighter days, a single pair can last the whole day.

Why it depends on your flow

Period underwear holds your flow in a built-in absorbent layer, backed by a waterproof barrier (we explain everything in Period underwear: how does it work?). That layer has a set capacity: the heavier your flow, the faster it fills up.

Flow varies from one person to another, and from one day to the next within the same cycle. For many people, the first days are the heaviest, then the flow tapers off. To see where you stand, read our guide Menstrual flow: how much blood do you lose?

How long to wear it, day by day

Time in your cycleFlowOur advice
First daysHeavyChange it more often: for example in the morning, late afternoon and at bedtime. The boxer, with more coverage, feels safer at night.
Middle of your periodMediumMorning and evening are often enough.
Last daysLightOne pair can last the whole day, up to 12 hours.

These are guidelines: your body is still your best guide.

How to know it's time to change

  • You start feeling damp: normally, the fabric against your skin keeps you dry. If you feel moisture, the absorbent layer is getting close to its capacity.
  • The underwear feels heavier in the gusset.
  • You'll be out for a long time: before a long day, a workout or a trip, put on a fresh pair.

Our tip for your first cycle: wear your underwear on a day off, at home, and check it after 4, 6 and then 8 hours. You'll quickly learn how long it protects you for your flow.

What about overnight?

This is where period underwear really makes a difference. Health Canada recommends changing tampons every 4 to 8 hours and avoiding wearing one overnight, because of the risk of toxic shock syndrome. Period underwear, on the other hand, is external protection: nothing is inserted into the vagina. ANSES, the French health agency, links menstrual toxic shock to internal products such as tampons and cups.

So you can sleep through the night in your period underwear. For your heaviest nights, the period boxer has a fuller cut, with an absorbent area that protects more when you're lying down.

How many pairs do you need?

The idea is simple: one pair you're wearing, one drying, one ready to go. Since the absorbent area takes several hours to dry, most people need 4 to 6 pairs to cover a full cycle stress-free, especially with a heavy flow.

Rinsed in cold water and then washed, each pair can be reused for years. All our tips are in How to wash period underwear.

When your flow is too heavy

If you have to change very often, it isn't necessarily normal. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), these signs can point to heavy periods:

  • periods lasting more than 7 days;
  • soaking through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours in a row;
  • needing to wear two products at the same time;
  • needing to change during the night;
  • clots the size of a quarter or larger.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear period underwear for 24 hours?

No, we don't recommend it. Even on a very light day, change it at least every 12 hours, then rinse it in cold water.

Will it smell if I wear it for a long time?

Our fabric is odour-resistant. As long as you wear it for the right amount of time for your flow and wash it well, you shouldn't notice any smell.

Can I wear it all day at work or school?

Yes. Depending on your flow, one pair can last from morning to evening. Keep a waterproof pouch in your bag so you can change if needed. For teens, also read our guide Period underwear for teens.

Can I use it with a cup or a tampon?

Yes. Many people use it as backup protection on their heaviest days, so they no longer worry about overflow.
